Michael Bell, 54, has been executed by lethal injection in Florida, bringing the number of executions in the US to 26 in 2023, a record in the last decade. Convicted of murdering two people in 1993, Bell acted out of revenge but mistakenly killed the wrong victims. Executions are concentrated in states such as Florida, Texas and South Carolina, and 21 of the 26 were carried out by lethal injection. The death penalty is abolished in 23 US states.
