The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Finland has urged the government to rectify historical injustices committed against the Sami people, in a report submitted to Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. The commission, established in 2021, has investigated the discrimination and human rights violations suffered by the Sami, including the assimilation policy that led to the separation of Sami children from their families. Until the end of the 20th century, they were placed in homes where they were forbidden to speak their language and practice their culture. Prime Minister Orpo acknowledged the need for an official apology.

The commission proposed 68 measures to improve the situation of the Sami, including the ratification of international conventions and specific legislation to protect their culture and traditional way of life. The Sami people also face challenges related to climate change and the exploitation of resources in the Arctic regions.
