Finland has decided to lift the ban on nuclear weapons, through a vote in parliament that took place on Wednesday, obtaining 125 votes in favor and 61 against.

This measure allows the circulation of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory, a decision welcomed by the Minister of Defense, Antti Häkämies, as being "essential" for the country's security.

Although Finland will facilitate the circulation of nuclear weapons, the official emphasized that there is no intention to permanently host such weapons. The current ban dates back to the 1980s and prohibits the import, possession, manufacture, and detonation of nuclear explosives.

Wednesday's vote marks a significant change in Finland's defense policy, influenced by Russia's war against Ukraine and NATO membership in 2023.

Häkämies argued that nuclear restrictions no longer reflect the current geopolitical realities of a NATO member state.
