Norway's representative has announced that no plastic pollution treaty will be reached in Geneva, following intense discussions and insufficient compromise proposals. Countries such as India and Uruguay signaled an inability to reach a consensus, while major differences between the "ambitious" group and oil-producing countries blocked progress. NGOs such as Greenpeace have warned that the failure of the negotiations is a wake-up call, pointing out that the petrochemical industry is prioritizing short-term interests over planetary health.
