On Monday, the interior ministers of the 27 member states of the European Union are meeting in Brussels to approve a significant tightening of migration policy. Among the measures discussed are the opening of 'return hubs' outside the EU's borders for migrants whose asylum applications are rejected, harsher penalties for those who refuse to leave European territory, and the expulsion of migrants to countries considered 'safe'. Although illegal arrivals have decreased by about 20%, pressure on European leaders has increased, and European Commissioner Magnus Brunner emphasizes the need to give citizens a sense of control over the situation.
The measures are supported by the right and the far right, but face skepticism from some states such as France and Spain, which question the legality and effectiveness of the return hubs. Negotiations for a new system of repatriation for asylum seekers are ongoing, and member states may be required to accept migrants or pay a financial contribution. However, many countries, including Belgium, Sweden, and Austria, have stated that they will not accept asylum seekers from other member states. A final decision on the distribution of asylum seekers must be made by the end of the year.
