The offer was rebuffed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, leading to a backlash on social media. Musk acquired X, formerly known as Twitter, for $44 billion in 2022. The purchase offer was presented to OpenAI's board of directors by Musk's lawyer, Marc Toberoff.
