Downsview Airport in Toronto, closed in 2024, will be transformed into a sustainable town, named YZD, with a budget of 30 billion dollars, starting in 2026. The project will include housing for over 50,000 people, schools, shops, and 75 acres of green spaces. The 2-kilometer runway will become a pedestrian park, connecting various neighborhoods. The old hangars will be preserved and transformed into commercial buildings, contributing to reducing the carbon footprint.
The project will integrate water management solutions to prevent flooding and will promote public transport and walking. Construction will be carried out in phases, starting with the 'Hangar District', which will include 3,000 new homes, with an estimated completion in 2031. This transformation reflects a global trend of revitalizing former airfields into green urban areas.
