President Donald Trump, along with his sons and the Trump Organization, has sued the Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), seeking $10 billion in damages. The action was filed in a federal court in Miami and is based on leaks of tax information to the press in 2019 and 2020, caused by a former IRS contractor, Charles Littlejohn. The plaintiffs claim that these disclosures had a significant negative impact on their reputation and financial interests.
The lawsuit is notable because Trump is taking legal action against government agencies in the executive branch that he leads. Charles Littlejohn was accused of illegally disclosing tax returns and pleaded guilty, being sentenced to five years in prison.
