New York City was affected by devastating floods caused by torrential rains, which brought record amounts of precipitation. Mayor Eric Adams announced that at least two people have died, a 39-year-old man who tried to save his dogs and another 43-year-old found in a basement.
The storms led to flooding in several neighborhoods, affecting streets and subway stations, and knocked down over 140 trees, causing damage to cars and power lines. The extreme weather disrupted air travel and rail traffic, and authorities issued flood alerts for areas in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. Precipitation records included 4.7 inches in Central Park and 5.31 inches at LaGuardia Airport.
