The fire broke out on April 29 at around 12:25 pm at a restaurant in Baita District, Liaoyang, causing large flames and dense smoke. CCTV state television reported the tragic toll of 22 dead and three injured. President Xi Jinping described the incident as an "extremely painful lesson" and called for the causes to be quickly identified and legal responsibility established. Fatal fires are frequent in China due to a failure to comply with safety regulations.
