Emergency teams are intervening in Switzerland after a train accident caused by extreme weather conditions.

On Tuesday morning, a train with approximately 80 passengers derailed on the Frutigen - Brig line, in the Valais canton, Switzerland, most likely due to an avalanche. The incident occurred around 07:00, between Goppenstein and Brig, and several people are reported to have been injured, although the exact toll is not known. Rescue teams and helicopters have been dispatched to the scene to assist.

In the respective region, the avalanche risk is at its maximum, and it has snowed heavily in the last 12 hours, with a snow layer of 20-50 cm. The Valais cantonal police have confirmed that the intervention is ongoing, and rail traffic on the affected section is interrupted, with estimates that it will last at least until 16:00. Authorities will provide official details about the situation of the passengers and the extent of the incident.
