The new president of the Eurogroup will be elected on Thursday, and the candidates are Kyriakos Pierrakakis from Greece and Vincent Van Peteghem from Belgium. Pierrakakis, the Minister of Finance since March, aims to reflect Greece's resilience after the debt crisis of 2010, having experience in the digital transformation of the state. Van Peteghem, the Belgian Minister of Budget, relies on his experience in European issues and his compromise skills in federal coalitions. Belgium opposes the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine, citing legal and financial risks. This issue will be discussed at a dinner of EU finance ministers and at the EU leaders' summit next week.
The Eurogroup, which coordinates the economic policies of the countries in the euro area, will also launch the nomination process for a new vice president of the European Central Bank, replacing Luis de Guindos. This election is a preparation for future changes in the ECB leadership, where the mandates of several members will expire in 2027.
