China and the US are in close competition to be the first to develop an industrial-scale fusion nuclear power plant. Although the US has long been a leader in the field, China has quickly caught up, investing significantly more than the Americans and building reactors at record speed. Nuclear fusion is considered the 'holy grail' of clean energy, but the technology remains difficult to master.
