According to the new Chinese law, starting from January 1, 2026, medications and contraceptive products, including condoms, will be subject to a value-added tax of 13%. Although the legislative change has not been widely publicized, it has generated discussions on social media, with citizens expressing humor regarding the higher costs of raising a child compared to using contraceptives. Medical experts express concern about the possible increase in unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases as a result of the rising costs of contraceptive products.

China's family planning policy, which imposed severe restrictions for decades, has been relaxed in recent years due to declining birth rates. In 2015, the limit was extended to two children, and in 2021 to three. Although Hu Lingling, a mother, considers the new tax to be ruthless, experts suggest that its impact on reproductive decisions will be minimal, considering the much higher costs associated with raising a child. In 2024, births in China significantly decreased, with 9.5 million children born, one-third less than in 2019.
