Canada has pledged to recognize an independent Palestinian state at the 80th UN General Assembly, following the lead of France and the UK. The step follows the Palestinian Authority's commitment to hold elections in 2026 without the involvement of Hamas. The decision was criticized by Israel, which called it a reward for Hamas and a threat to ceasefire efforts. Canada stresses that a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace in the region.
