The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, was found guilty by the Supreme Court of Justice for planning a coup to remain in power after losing the 2022 elections.

This decision came after three of the five Supreme Court judges voted to find him guilty, one acquitted him, and one had yet to vote. Judge Carmen Lucia was the third vote – which allowed the majority – among the five judges to find the right-wing leader guilty of planning a coup. The decision against Bolsonaro, at the age of 70, will only become final after the fifth judge gives their opinion.
