The Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that Australia will not accept Turkey's offer to co-host the UN climate change summit in 2026, emphasizing that the rules of the United Nations Framework Convention do not allow for such collaboration. Albanese asserted that the summit should take place in Adelaide, in southern Australia.

Without a withdrawal from one of the two candidacies or a compromise, Australia and Turkey risk losing the opportunity to host the conference, which could lead to the summit being awarded to Germany. This unprecedented situation highlights the tensions between the two countries in the context of organizing COP31.
