Artificial Intelligence sends an innocent woman to prison in the USA

Angela Lipps, a woman from Tennessee, spent over five months in jail after being misidentified by a facial recognition system based on artificial intelligence, linking her to crimes committed in North Dakota, a state she has never been to. The Fargo police acknowledged that there were 'some errors' in the investigation process, but did not offer an apology for her arrest. Lipps was arrested on July 14, unaware that a warrant had been issued for her name.

Although the police used AI technology to identify her, the police chief admitted that reliance on information from a partner agency's system was part of the problem. After Lipps was extradited to North Dakota, her lawyers presented evidence showing that she was in Tennessee at the time the crimes were committed, and the charges were dropped on December 23.

Lipps described the experience as devastating, and her legal team is investigating possible civil rights violations. The case raises serious questions about the use of AI technologies in policing and the associated risks.
