Former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad has been placed under international wanted status by Interpol, after being ousted from power in December last year. The arrest warrant was issued in absentia for serious charges, including premeditated murder and torture, related to the repression in 2011. Since his fall, the new leadership under Ahmed al-Sharaa is trying to improve Syria's international image and relations with Russia, despite the troubled past.
