Under the leadership of libertarian president Javier Milei, Argentina is preparing to implement a citizenship by investment program that invites the world's wealthy to contribute to the repayment of the country's debts in exchange for obtaining an Argentine passport. The program, which could be launched this year, will offer citizenship in exchange for a non-refundable donation of approximately $500,000 or by purchasing zero-coupon sovereign bonds worth approximately $1 million.
The details of the program are still being finalized, and officials hope that it will help cover the tens of billions of dollars in debts that Argentina must repay in the coming years. The country has not returned to international capital markets since the 2020 restructuring and is seeking solutions to attract capital. Argentina would thus become one of the largest countries offering citizenship by investment, providing visa-free access to more countries than any other similar program. 'Golden passport' programs have gained global popularity, with governments seeking to attract financial contributions from the international elite.
