Angela Merkel, former Chancellor of Germany, has announced that she does not intend to run in the presidential elections of 2027, according to a spokesperson. This statement comes after the tabloid Bild suggested that the Green Party could support her to become a candidate for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

The information has been denied both by Merkel and by the leadership of the Greens, who stated that they have not had discussions in this regard. The current president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will complete his term in March 2027, which has generated speculation about a possible return of Merkel to the political forefront.

Since her withdrawal from the chancellorship in 2021, Merkel has had a reduced public presence, but she will participate next week in a CDU conference as a guest of honor.
