Andrej Babis, the leader of the populist ANO party, has been appointed Prime Minister of the Czech Republic by President Petr Pavel, after his party won the parliamentary elections in October. Babis returns to power after four years in opposition and expects to form a cabinet that will include far-right, anti-EU, and pro-Russian parties.
He has consistently criticized EU institutions, promising to reject policies on migration and the environment and to reduce military aid to Ukraine, including the Czech initiative to supply shells. Babis emphasized that he wants to defend the interests of the Czech Republic and to actively participate in the EU leaders' summit in December. He is also facing legal issues related to allegations of fraud concerning EU subsidies, but he stated that he will transfer his assets to avoid conflicts of interest.
