An American Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft is operating from Varna, Bulgaria, to intensify surveillance of the Black Sea following a series of drone attacks on commercial vessels in the region.
The aircraft arrived on October 18 from Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily, and Bulgaria’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that it is conducting patrol missions over the sea. Sofia did not specify how long the aircraft would remain in Bulgaria.
According to the Bulgarian authorities, the flights are part of the heightened security measures announced after the attacks on commercial vessels. The aircraft conducts daily missions east of Varna, at an altitude of up to 2,800 meters, according to the Maritime.bg portal.
The P-8A Poseidon specializes in maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and monitoring surface vessels. The aircraft is equipped with radar, electro-optical sensors, and other advanced systems.
Bulgaria requested fighter jets, counter-drone systems, and anti-aircraft missiles from NATO following the attacks reported since October 5 against seven vessels off the Bulgarian and Romanian coasts. At least two sailors have died, 28 are missing, and three vessels have sunk.
Although Bulgarian authorities suggested possible Russian involvement, Moscow has not been officially accused in the absence of material evidence.
