WHO reported nearly 10,000 COVID-19 deaths in December, with significant increases in hospitalizations and intensive care.

The increased number of cases is due to gatherings over the winter holidays. The WHO director urged governments to continue surveillance, sequencing the virus and ensuring access to testing, treatment and vaccines. WHO data was collected from less than 50 countries, mainly in Europe and the Americas.
