Several Albanian opposition lawmakers disrupted the parliamentary session in Tirana on Thursday, October 29, 2026, by lighting smoke bombs and signal flares and throwing objects at Prime Minister Edi Rama. The action took place during the vote on a new law concerning the central bank, amid antigovernment protests and accusations that the head of government is downplaying the crisis in the country.

Opposition lawmakers chanted “Rama, resign!”, banged on desks, and displayed photographs they claimed showed demonstrators injured by police. Despite the incidents, the law was adopted with 84 votes, the minimum number required. Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi ordered the removal of four opposition lawmakers.

The protests, which began in May over a controversial tourism real estate project, intensified in October. Students are demanding greater funding for education and the prime minister’s resignation. Approximately 350 people, including police officers, have been injured, and dozens of demonstrators have been arrested.

The government introduced fines of up to 5,500 euros for violent protesters. Edi Rama accused Russia and Iran of online disinformation, while demonstrators criticize the entire political class for corruption.
