The branch of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Lower Saxony has been classified as 'extremist' by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the internal intelligence service of the state. This assessment was confirmed by the Minister of the Interior, Daniela Behrens, who emphasized that right-wing extremism poses a major threat to society.

AfD, an anti-immigration party, has become the largest opposition party after last year's federal parliamentary elections, but has been consistently accused of unconstitutional behaviors and statements.

Several AfD branches in Germany have been classified as cases of right-wing extremism, allowing for their monitoring by authorities. Although AfD has gained electoral support of 20% in a recent poll, other parties continue to exclude collaboration with it.

In Lower Saxony, the intelligence service reports that the number of right-wing extremists within AfD has increased from 600 to 850, and the party could achieve record results in the elections in five states scheduled for this year, including a possible absolute majority in Saxony-Anhalt.
