Tino Chrupalla, co-chairman of the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), harshly criticized the statements of Jordan Bardella, the president of Rassemblement National (RN) from France, who highlighted the "ideological convergences" with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In an intervention on Welt TV, Chrupalla emphasized that Bardella should focus on the goal of becoming president, instead of allying with Merz.

RN accused AfD of radicalism, and Chrupalla rejected the interference of other parties in German politics, which he considers problematic. Bardella also mentioned the closeness to Giorgia Meloni and the tightening of Germany's immigration policy. AfD, considered an anti-immigration and pro-Russian party, is leading in the polls in Germany, while Merz's popularity has significantly decreased.
