James Osgood, a 55-year-old man, was executed by lethal injection in Alabama for the rape and murder of a woman in 2010. Osgood dropped his appeal against the execution and explicitly requested to be executed. The Equal Justice Initiative pointed out that Osgood was denied a fair trial, citing mitigating circumstances related to his childhood abuse. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 14 executions in the US, mostly by lethal injection.
