A powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale occurred in the Drake Strait, near Antarctica, at a depth of 10.8 kilometers. Although the USGS initially reported a magnitude 8, this has been revised. Authorities issued a tsunami warning for the Chilean coast, but this was quickly canceled as there was no real risk. The quake struck 962km southeast of Punta Arenas, Chile, causing no damage or casualties in the sparsely populated area.
