U.S. authorities have announced that 18 Americans evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius are in quarantine and being monitored for hantavirus symptoms. One repatriated passenger tested positive for a respiratory infection. The two planes that transported 28 evacuees from the Canary Islands have arrived in the Netherlands, and the passengers will remain in a quarantine facility before repatriation.
Since the outbreak began, three people have died, and the virus, known as the Andes virus, is generally spread by rodents, having limited ability to transmit between humans. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated that the U.S. response is under control, and President Trump has deemed the management of the situation as "good."
WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus assured the public that the risk remains low, emphasizing that this is not another COVID-19. So far, WHO has confirmed seven cases of hantavirus, and the MV Hondius is heading to Rotterdam for disinfection, with 25 crew members and two doctors on board.
