The arrests took place in the context of an investigation into corruption and tender fraud ordered by the Izmir prosecutor. Those arrested include members of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and former mayor Tunc Soyer. The action is part of a wider crackdown on the opposition, similar to that in Istanbul, where Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was jailed. The CHP claims the measures are politicized, while the government denies the accusations.
