The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, made a visit on Saturday to the city of Bunia in eastern Congo, the epicenter of a Bundibugyo-type Ebola outbreak. Despite recent aid and better-organized health units, the virus continues to raise concerns, with 906 suspected cases and 223 reported deaths. Tedros emphasized the importance of support in combating the epidemic in the affected area, mentioning that although the situation is difficult, Congo has experience in managing Ebola outbreaks.
The European Union and the USA have announced significant aid, including $80 million from the USA, to support intervention efforts. However, Doctors Without Borders has warned that the current response is failing to keep pace with the rapidity of the epidemic.
