The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, announced that the ROGEN project, which aims to develop genomic research in Romania, is entering a crucial stage. This includes the genomic sequencing of 5,000 samples from presumed healthy individuals across the country, as well as the long-term monitoring of 600 of these. The goal is to understand the interaction between genetic predisposition and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, which will allow the development of personalized risk scores for medical interventions tailored to each patient.
Rogobete emphasized the importance of investments in health infrastructure, mentioning that ROGEN is funded through the Health Program 2021-2027, with a budget of over 422 million lei. The project will build biobanks, data analysis platforms, and a national genomic network, connecting universities and research centers. The Minister stressed that genomics is not a luxury, but a strategic necessity for accurate diagnosis, early prevention, and personalized therapies, highlighting the clear direction of the Ministry of Health in developing an integrated national genomic strategy.
