Romania recorded in 2024 an infant mortality rate of 6.6 per thousand live births, the highest in the last ten years, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics.
The Mureș County is at the top of the statistics, with 13 deaths per thousand newborns, in contrast to Bucharest, which has a rate of 3.3. Ialomița and Suceava also exceed 10 deaths per thousand children.
Save the Children Romania emphasizes that the survival of newborns depends on the equipping of maternity hospitals and rapid access to medical services. In total, 952 deaths were recorded in 2024, most caused by respiratory diseases and congenital malformations.
Save the Children has launched a program to combat infant mortality, investing in the equipping of medical units and supporting 135 maternity hospitals across the country.
