Daniel Bran, the president of the Romanian Association for Generic Medicines (APMGR), warned that the new European environmental requirements could lead to significant price increases for common medications.

Daniel Bran explained that cheap medications, with fixed prices, can no longer cope with the rising production costs caused by inflation and energy prices, which will lead to their disappearance from the market. He estimated that prices for medications such as metformin should increase by 6-8 times, and for amoxicillin by 4-5 times, due to fees related to wastewater treatment. The president of APMGR emphasized that it is essential to find a balance between environmental objectives and patient access to treatments, calling for the authorities' help in implementing the new regulations without affecting the availability of medications. He mentioned that 70% of prescribed treatments are generics and biosimilars, most having prices below 100 lei, and highlighted the need for a rapid adjustment of prices to prevent the gradual disappearance of these essential medications.
