Romania has been included on the map of countries with a high risk of re-emergence of poliomyelitis due to very low vaccination coverage.

Although the last case of poliomyelitis was recorded over twenty years ago, specialists warn that the lack of immunization and the circulation of the virus in other regions can lead to the reintroduction of the disease. Attention is also drawn to the risks posed by other diseases, such as measles, which in the past caused severe cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, following the epidemic from 2016–2018. International organizations are calling for urgent measures to increase vaccination and prevent potential epidemics.
