Over the past week, Romania’s public agenda was dominated by the unauthorized protest of farmers and livestock breeders in Victory Square, which escalated into violence and sparked controversy over the intervention of the Capital City Gendarmerie, by the death of General Dorin Ioniță, found shot in Prahova, as well as by political disputes surrounding the AUR bill concerning National Flag Day.

An assessment carried out through the NewsVibe platform, which integrates artificial intelligence technologies to analyze content from the media and social networks, indicated the publication of 41,422 materials about domestic politics during this period, on relevant web sources, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok channels in Romania. The processed data revealed ten entities that benefited from an intensified presence in the digital environment, analyzing both the factors behind this increase and the contribution of online channels to the dissemination and consolidation of the messages. Political topics on the rise

Farmers’ protests and the intervention of the Capital City Gendarmerie: An unauthorized protest by farmers and livestock breeders took place in Victory Square, escalating into acts of violence. The Capital City Gendarmerie intervened to ensure public order, generating controversy and accusations. AUR, through its leader George Simion, supported the protest, accusing the Gendarmerie of restricting access. Traian Băsescu commented on the violence, suspecting AUR’s involvement. The Government, through interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, called for calm and an end to the violence, acknowledging the demands of the Professional Association of Shepherds, represented by Ionica Sterp, but emphasizing that no representative association of sheep breeders participated in the protest. Ilie Bolojan was criticized by Sorin Grindeanu for the way he handled the situation.

The death of General Dorin Ioniță: The tragedy involving General Dorin Ioniță, found shot in the head in Prahova, generated a wave of discussions about the circumstances of his death, including details about his personal life and wealth. Former Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă attended the funeral.

AUR’s bill on National Flag Day: A legislative proposal initiated by AUR and also supported by PSD and PNL lawmakers generated controversy. Among other provisions, the bill requires officials to kiss the flag on National Flag Day and imposes fines of 10,000 lei on those who fail to comply with this provision. The proposal was criticized by UDMR deputy Csoma Botond, who compared it to totalitarian practices, and by Sorin Grindeanu, who suggested that love of country can also be shown without such gestures. The Romanian Patriarchate also criticized the proposals as “liturgically and canonically unfounded”

The indictment of Raed Arafat: Raed Arafat, head of the DSU, was indicted in the case concerning the purchase of a SMURD helicopter, involving damages of nearly one million euros. He confirmed that he had been officially notified of his status as a defendant, but stated that he would not resign, having “a lot of work to do.” This event generated a negative sentiment online, calling into question the integrity of the procurement process and his position.

Omar Hayssam’s conditional release: The conditional release of Syrian national Omar Hayssam, convicted of terrorism, generated negative reactions after the Ilfov Tribunal definitively ordered his release. The decision was criticized by former President Traian Băsescu, while the authorities announced that Hayssam was to be taken into custody by immigration police for the application of legal measures concerning his removal from Romanian territory. Subsequently, he was hospitalized under guard, given his state of health and the procedures under way.

Minister Alexandru Nazare’s wedding and the political context: The event brought into the spotlight the wedding of interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare to Maria Mihali, at Cașin Monastery. The best man was Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Greece’s Minister of Economy and Finance and president of the Eurogroup, with whom Alexandru Nazare held discussions about the European budget and Greece’s economic model.

Firefighters’ Day: Firefighters’ Day was marked by positive messages from officials such as Nicușor Dan and Cătălin Predoiu, who emphasized the essential role of firefighters in national security and the need for a modern culture of resilience.
