Discussions about budget spending cuts and the presidential elections have been the main topics of domestic political debate in recent days, but the scale of debate in the online space has decreased compared to the previous week, when political and social protests took place, affecting the intensity of coverage of the main parties in the relevant online sources.
According to data analyzed with the support of NewsVibe, a platform for real-time analysis of online conversations, the number of mentions about PSD, PNL and AUR decreased in the last week, while the volume of mentions about USR and SOS Romania increased. The biggest decreases were for PSD and AUR, while the biggest increase was for SOS Romania, which registered 150% more mentions than the previous week.
The total number of mentions of the parties, as well as their impact, however, decreased compared to the previous period analyzed.
Top 5 parties by online visibility
- Social Democratic Party - 1,650 mentions
- National Liberal Party - 1,608 mentions
- Save Romania Union - 695 mentions
- Alianța pentru Unirea Românilor - 578 mentions
- SOS Romania - 129 mentions
Note - only mentions from relevant online and social media sources (sources validated by the NewsVibe platform)
VOLVOLUME OF MENTIONS. For PSD, the peak in mentions was generated by the decision of the party's leadership to validate the candidacy of Crin Antonescu for the position of joint candidate of the Coalition. In the case of PNL, the spike was driven by the initial messages of party president Ilie Bolojan on spending cuts. USR, on the other hand, registered the most mentions on the day the Parliament refused to convene an extraordinary session on the impeachment of President Iohannis. For AUR, the highest accumulation of mentions was generated by the protest organized at the prefectures, and for SOS Romania - by the interview given by Diana Șoșoaca to a Russian publication.

COMPARATORY VIEW. Ratioing the estimated impact of the mentions to their number, we observe decreases for PSD and PNL and increases for USR and AUR. For example, USR gets 15% of the total volume of mentions about all 5 parties, while their estimated impact increases to 20%, due to the bonus of the appearance of these mentions in sources with larger audiences.
Despite the significant increase in the number of mentions compared to the previous week, SOS Romania remains at a very low share and far behind the rest of the political actors in terms of generated impact.

IMPACT. If in the cases of PNL, PSD and USR the peaks of impact coincide with the moments when there were the most mentions, in the case of AUR the highest impact was the mentions on the day when the Parliament refused to call an extraordinary session.
In the case of SOS Romania, the highest impact was generated by mentions related to the statements of Cătălin Avramescu, who, announcing his presidential candidacy, claimed that the parties led by Diana Șoșoaca and George Simion should be banned.

ACCELERATING TRENDS. The decrease in the intensity of the parties' reflection in online covnerships is also apparent from the analysis that calculates trends in this visibility, based on comparisons with averages of previous visibility. Thus, for all parties the acceleration curves are close to zero for most of the week, with a few punctuated oscillations.
SOS Romania increases at the beginning of the interval, when it announces that it has referred to the CCR the expiration of President Iohannis's mandate - the curve is wider because it reflects the contrast with the low visibility in the rest of the interval. USR rises on the day when the Parliament refuses to convene an extraordinary session on the president's dismissal - which had been requested by AUR and POT. For PSD, the increase comes on the day the Social Democrats announced that they had validated Crin Antonescu's candidacy for the presidency within the party leadership.
