The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has announced a new package of sanctions against Russia, which includes a complete ban on maritime services for Russian oil exports. This measure mainly targets the transportation of oil to India and China, which is carried out with Western tankers, especially from the fleets of EU countries such as Greece, Cyprus, and Malta.

The sanctions are intended to replace the price cap on Russian oil, aiming to reduce the revenues that support the war in Ukraine. Von der Leyen emphasized that Russia will be pushed towards peace negotiations only through pressure.

The new package, the 20th since the beginning of the invasion, will include additional bans on metals, chemicals, critical minerals, as well as sanctions against 20 regional Russian banks and measures against cryptocurrencies. The proposal must be approved by the EU member states to come into effect.
