The European Commission announces a record intervention program against wildfires, planned for the summer of 2026, under the Civil Protection Mechanism. 777 firefighters from 14 European countries will be prepositioned in high-risk areas in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, marking the largest participation since the start of the prepositioning program in 2022. There will be 22 firefighting aircraft and 5 helicopters available, including one helicopter from Romania. The Commission will coordinate the deployment of resources, considering the increasing risks of wildfires in Europe. Expertise will be provided by the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre, which will monitor the situation 24/7. Additionally, in 2026, a new regional firefighting station will be opened in Cyprus, which will support the preparation and response to wildfires. Romania has previously contributed resources to interventions in France, Greece, and Spain.
