The European Union has begun preparations for the 21st package of sanctions against Russia, according to statements by the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, during an informal meeting of the European Council in Nicosia.

She emphasized that the measures are intended to send a clear message to Russia, highlighting continued support for Ukraine. The previous package, the 20th, was recently adopted, and Hungary lifted its veto, thus facilitating the approval of 90 billion euros in financial assistance for Kiev.

The new sanctions package could include measures against certain Russian oligarchs and representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church who support the war. The current sanctions target over 2,600 individuals and entities, being temporary and periodically reviewed to adapt to the developments of the situation.
