Italy has increased the transfer of migrants to the Gjader center in Albania, an emblematic project of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, aimed at combating illegal immigration. This center, opened in 2024, has been largely empty due to legal challenges, but recently it has started to host approximately 90 people, following significant transfers. The new measures adopted by the European Parliament facilitate the return of asylum seekers to countries considered 'safe'. The NGO TAI reported that the transferred individuals include migrants with psychological issues and citizens from countries like Iran, where repatriation is difficult. Additionally, the detained individuals have limited access to communication and legal resources, and few of them are subsequently repatriated. Criticism also focuses on the use of coercive measures during the transfers between Italy and Albania.
