The European Union decided on Friday evening to open the first stage of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, and discussions could already begin on Monday. This first stage focuses on the fundamental values of the bloc, including the rule of law and democratic institutions.

Both countries have been affected by Russian military aggression since the collapse of the Soviet Union and consider that joining the EU represents a decisive shift away from Moscow. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the determination and efforts of both countries in advancing reforms, despite enormous challenges.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that EU membership is a strategic priority to protect Ukraine from Russian interference. In Moldova, the breakaway region of Transnistria is occupied by Russian troops, and the Kremlin has attempted to influence the presidential elections in 2024, but Maia Sandu has remained in power.
