The Interior Ministers of the European Union will meet today via videoconference to discuss the migrant crisis in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, considered the most severe since the crisis in 2021.

On August 1, 22 European leaders, including the Prime Minister of Italy and the Chancellor of Germany, called for an emergency videoconference to assess the situation created by the illegal entry of thousands of migrants. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, condemned the images from Ceuta, emphasizing the need for the rapid return of migrants. While some states, such as Denmark and Italy, have called for the exclusion of Spain from Schengen, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, described the irregular entry as an attack on the territorial integrity of Spain.

The crisis began on July 20, culminating in the entry of up to 60,000 migrants into Ceuta, and the death toll has reached at least 72. Ceuta, located at the border with Morocco, remains a gateway from Africa into Europe, and the Schengen regime applied here complicates the migratory situation.
