The National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM) has announced new measures aimed at combating disinformation and ensuring a safer digital space during the electoral period, in accordance with the European Regulation on Digital Services (DSA). Online platforms and hosting service providers will be required to implement clear methods for reporting illegal content, including those with political intent, in the context of the local elections in 2025.

ANCOM will monitor compliance with these rules and will act as a point of contact between Romania and the European Commission. Major platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, prohibit political advertising during the electoral period, and users can report content deemed propagandistic. Non-compliance with these regulations may result in significant penalties.

Additionally, very large online platform providers (VLOPs) must assess and manage systemic risks, including the dissemination of illegal content and influencing electoral processes. Traditional authorities also retain prerogatives in the online environment, having competencies in actions against illegal content. These measures are essential for ensuring the accuracy and safety of information in the digital space during a complex electoral year.
