Donald Trump expressed again, on Sunday, his dissatisfaction with the recent trade agreement between China and Canada, which will facilitate access to the Canadian market for nearly 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles. The American president criticized Canada's decision to strengthen trade ties with Beijing, suggesting that this could lead to a "takeover" of Canada by China.
Trump joked, stating that the Chinese could ban ice hockey in Canada. In his reaction, Trump announced that he would impose a 100% tariff on Canadian imports into the United States if the agreement is confirmed. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent added that these tariffs would be applied if Canada allows the sale of Chinese products in North America, under the NAFTA free trade zone.
