The ambassadors of the 27 countries of the European Union are meeting urgently on Sunday, convened by Cyprus, after American President Donald Trump threatened higher tariffs for European allies until the U.S. can buy Greenland. The Dutch foreign minister described Trump's actions as "blackmail," emphasizing that they do not help the NATO alliance. Reactions from European leaders are critical, with warnings about a "dangerous downward spiral" in transatlantic relations.

The President of the European Commission and the President of the EU Council emphasized that tariffs would undermine relations and affect prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic. Additionally, the Spanish Prime Minister warned that a forced takeover of Greenland by the U.S. would benefit Russia. Reactions from Russia have been dismissive, adding further tensions in the current context.
