The employment rate of the population aged 20-64 was 69.0% in 2025, a decrease of 0.5 percentage points compared to the previous year, according to INS data.
The active population of Romania numbered 8.194 million people, of which 7.694 million were employed and 500,300 were unemployed. The employment rate of the working-age population (15-64 years) was 63.0%, with men having an employment rate of 71.4%, compared to 54.4% for women. The youth employment rate (15-24 years) was 17.6%, and the employment rate for older persons (55-64 years) was 57.0%. Individuals with higher education had the highest employment rate (90.1%). Employees constituted 86.9% of the employed population, and the private sector absorbed 82.3% of the workforce. The unemployment rate rose to 6.1%, significantly impacting young people, where it reached 26.1%. The long-term unemployment rate was 2.1%, particularly affecting young people, with an incidence of 49.0%.
