On December 18, the Government of Romania approved a bill for the payment of a debt of approximately 6.8 million dollars to the Government of the United States, a debt arising from a loan contracted in 1992 for the import of cotton intended for the textile industry. This amount includes overdue capital, interest, and penalties accumulated over more than 30 years. The debts were generated by companies that went bankrupt or were dissolved, and the Romanian state assumes the responsibility of payment to meet international obligations and avoid additional penalties.
As of June 30, 2025, Romania owed 6.8 million dollars, of which 4.9 million represents unpaid capital, 821,000 dollars in interest, and 1.08 million dollars in penalties. The debt continues to grow, and the payment will be made from the budget of the Ministry of Economy, ensuring transparent management of funds. The bill establishes the legal framework for identifying the amounts owed and making payments, thus protecting Romania's financial interests. The payment of the debt will maintain the status of 'Dependable Undertaking', facilitating participation in international procurement programs and strengthening Romania's credibility in trade relations with external partners, especially with the USA.
