Italy, Romania, and Slovakia have requested the European Commission to develop an 'extraordinary European plan for the dairy sector' to address the systemic crises facing this sector. The initiative, led by Italian Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, will be discussed within the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council. The ministers propose activating a European funding program to support voluntary production cuts, providing financial compensation to farmers who choose to limit their production in response to falling prices. Among the requested measures are aids for the private storage of cheeses, butter, and UHT milk, as well as measures to support vulnerable farms, including moratoriums on their debts. Additionally, the three countries are calling for investments in promotional campaigns for dairy products, emphasizing their nutritional value and quality, especially cheeses, to stimulate domestic consumption and improve their presence in international markets.
